What is gratitude?
Gratitude is a word which stimulates most people's senses. It is an emotion that is but it synergistically offers a direct link to other feelings such as contentment, joy and kindness.
Expressing gratitude is a subconscious power to stimulate the power to create miracles. Studies have shown that when you express gratitude, the use of negativity or hateful words can be shifted and create a better and more positive emotional state. People that express gratitude experience less stress, they live a healthier and more full life, it has also been shown that expressing gratitude can help with lessening levels of pain.
How do you express gratitude?
There’s not a one-shoe-fits all when it comes to expressing gratitude. When expressing gratitude it comes from a highly emotional and personal place within. Gratitude is a journey that leads you to improve and unlock new levels of happiness, peace and joy that is scientifically proven.
There are techniques you can try as methods of expressing gratitude:
1. Association
Think back to a time, context or event where you were. Allow yourself and your awareness to fully immerse in that state. Focus on what you felt, your surroundings, the sounds or smells. Make it as real as possible. When you do this exercise, you are allowing your neuro-plasticity to seek gratitude in any situation. Do this exercise daily at the end of the day or before you go to sleep.
2. Stepping into someone else’s shoes
A form of empathy. When you really put yourself in someone else’s shoes, there’s an immediate sense of relief and gratitude for the fact that you are not in that position. Not only do you experience the emotions, but you will also facilitate you to look at yourself with more love and compassion.
3. Well-formed and focused outcome
Set markers. Write down what you would like to achieve in your journey of gratitude. It allows you to remind yourself daily of what you’re working towards. To actively improve your gratitude muscle, small daily exercises will drive you to reaching your long-term goals.
4. Timelines
Do this exercise at least every six months. Draw up a timeline of your life, go into detail about events that you experienced and take note of how you felt, why you felt that way and how it may have affected you. From when you were born to your first memories, during your childhood and teenage years, adolescence and adulthood. Travel through the key moments in your life and take note of the significant acts of love and sacrifice from others during those years and find gratitude in that. You can even take it further and use that as a way into your future. Taking note of these hardships, moments of love and sacrifice can become a lesson of growth and resilience for you.
It’s important to realize that setting aside everything and really getting down to what defines your life, your drive, your passion and happiness.
Pouring gratitude into everything you do, or finding small reasons to be grateful in your everyday life, can help remind you of the small joys in life that many people overlook. In times of crisis finding small pockets of gratitude drives you to keep moving forward and finding that reason to continue doing what you love. You could be grateful for a healthy body, having a home to live in, a job, perhaps even just being alive could be your form of gratitude.
Miracles and gratitude come when you least expect it. Take time now, pause and think of a small or big miracle that you’ve experienced recently and take note of how you can be grateful for that.
There’s a saying that goes, once ego dies, man survives. How this ties into the topic of gratitude and miracles is that once you’ve let go of pride, ego and selfishness, hate and negative emotions towards a certain situation or circumstance - you’re giving yourself the opportunity to find gratitude in times of hardship or an unpleasant experience. Whether it be overcoming hurdles of bad health, financial challenges, personal challenges, family hardships or even the small things that can bring you down. It’s a good thing to find reasons to show gratitude even when it seems impossible.
If we talk about a story where a man had just purchased a new truck and recently had a presentation he’d traveled out of town for. Lovely truck, brand new, had all the specs he had been dreaming of and yearning for his entire life. He absolutely treasured this truck, it gave him a sense of pride, self confidence and accomplishment. However, a small backset proved to him that he had not yet reached a point of complete gratitude or loss of ego.
The evening of his presentation as he was loading up his car to drive back home, he noticed a man parked on the side of the road with this hood popped up asking for someone, anyone to help jump start his car. Much like when we pass a homeless person, sadly we try to avoid eye contact to lessen the feeling of guilt.
So the man tried his damndest to avoid the stranded stranger, but in his gut something had compelled him to stop and offer his assistance. As he got out of his car and walked toward the stranded stranger, he kept saying to himself, ‘how do I open the hood of my truck?’. As he started to unpack his cables to help the stranded stranger with his car, he closely observed the man opening the hood of his car from behind.
Unable to bring himself to even admit to a stranger that he had no idea how to open the hood brought him both a sense of relief and gratitude. Needless to say that this moment was indeed a pivotal one, it showed the man that not only is it okay to put your pride aside and ask for help, but also that miracles happen when you least expect them. A learning curve in all aspects.
